How To Handle Difficult Students

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

Many of you asked us how you handle difficult students. We meet a variety of students. There are those who are shy, too energetic, unfocused, uninterested, happy, polite, and those who are rude. How can a teacher keep his sanity and his complaint record clean? Here are some tips:

1. INHALE, EXHALE. REMAIN CALM.

This is a hackneyed phrase, but believe us, staying calm will keep you safe. It is natural to be angry, but once you get angry, you become less logical.

2. PRACTICE POSITIVE SCRIPTING.

Compose yourself before saying anything to the student. Use words that would not provoke them to retaliate more.

3. IGNORE THE BEHAVIOR, NOT THE STUDENT.

Make sure that you are correcting the student’s bad behavior only. Do not make them feel that you hate them.

4. LISTEN.

Sometimes, we lose the student’s attention or interest because they feel that we are not listening. They also resort to rudeness because of misunderstandings. These problems can be solved by listening attentively.

5. CONSIDER CULTURAL DIFFERENCES.

Please know your student. We cater Chinese students, it wouldn’t hurt to learn or read about their culture.

6. RECOGNIZE AND REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOR.

Be generous with rewards and praises, especially if the student deserves them. Always acknowledge good behavior. We tend to overlook these things, and just focus on the wrongdoings of our students.

7. ATTEND CHAMP.

This training is specially designed to make teachers complaints-proof! If you want to join the training, please book CHAMP through your Mypage here http://mypage.51talk.com/admin/service/train_app_list.php

8. SECURE SCREENSHOTS.

When all else fails, secure screenshots and file a ticket to support PH.

There are more ways to handle difficult students and we encourage you to also share your surefire practices in the comment section! Happy teaching everyone!

ps: If you have noticed, students with attitude in class usually do not have regular teachers. They are hopping from one to another. I believe it is because of their attitude. Nobody is dying to have them stay as regulars. I also believe that how much knowledge the student has acquired from his lessons is dependent on the type of behavior he shows in class. If he does not listen at all, then what would you expect??? You are the one to blame.

One teacher here is right. 51Talk should value not just their clients but also their teachers. Students should also be responsible for their behavior and parents for their kids (referring to the older kids; I understand the very young ones). If one gets a slap in the face for misbehaving, then he deserves it! Challenging students always get the better of me. If all this tips don't work for me, I usually resort to throwing at them sarcastic remarks in the chat section, while keeping the smile on my face. If they don't listen, I usually challenge them to have both of us waste our time and not discuss the lesson. I only do this with my pre-teens students. Of…

@ margarethbacani ... Thank you Margaret for your comment. actually you are right. No worries l am on teachers side. It is only a suggestion of what they can do, in order not to feel bad about themselves.

I am also being harassed. My student now for 2 months , 2 consecutive of 25 minutes in 1 day. He is only 9 years old , saying , l am bad , even typing words that are no longer appropriate. It doesn't mean that it's Okay with me .... it's Not

l hope that whenever a child/parent file a complaint, the company should investigate first . before they take actions against the teachers. If( 51talk) doesn't do anything about the incide…
