Respecting Cultures in the Online Classroom

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

ESL online class is the bridge that brings cultures together. The culture that the student grew up with and the culture that the teacher practices at home.

Connecting with your student and finding common ground for better engagement will be easier if you know what topics you can tap into.

The Philippines and China have a bond that is centuries old. Due to the number of years that we have been trading, our cultures have mixed to some extent. There are certain traits that we share-like Filial Piety, Courtesy, and the world's oldest Chinatown is right here in Manila. However, we also have our differences, and that needs to be respected.

There are some topics that can be easily discussed freely in the Philippines that are off-limits, and sensitive in China. There are boundaries that cannot be crossed.

Here is the list of taboo topics that MUST be AVOIDED

1. The 3 T's [Taiwan, Tibet and Tiananmen]

2. Disputed Islands

3. Diaoyu Island

4. Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau

5. Political Institutions/Systems

6. One Party/Multi Party Rule

7. Freedom of Religious Belief

8. Illegal Organization

9. Adult Materials/Explicit Content

10. COVID-19

11. Sexuality

Conversation about any of the topics mentioned above may lead to a disagreement or spark a very negative conversation. Respect is the key. We may not understand the reasons why they are taboo in China, but we have to respect certain things are simply off limits. After all, there are also taboo topics here in the Philippines that we want others to respect. Written by: Lorry Virgo
